Create An American Flag

Introduction:
The American flag has a rich and colorful history. Creating a new one involves the element of design and concept of symbolism in an art project. To simplify the project, the present colors of the American flag are used. However, the artist may choose to design a flag with different shapes and symbolic meanings of colors than our current flag.

Objective:
To become aware of the design history of the American flag. To study color and shape symbolism.

Materials:

  • Red, white, and blue construction paper
  • White glue
  • Red, white, and blue colored pencils
  • Red, white, and blue markers
  • Scissors
  • Anticipatory Set: Show the students pictures of previous American flags. Talk about the symbolism of our present day flag. Study flags from other European countries: England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Note colors and common shapes used in the flags.

Directions:
1. Cut shapes out of the red, white, and blue construction paper.

2. Glue the shapes onto a base sheet 14"X17" or larger. This sheet should be red, white, or blue.

3. Draw additional details on the flag with colored pencils or markers.

4. Tell your friends what the colors and shapes symbolize in your flag.

5. Hang up the flag for Memorial Day!
