 Oil Pastels Postcard

By Colleen Anderson

Introduction:
Oil pastels have numerous advantages as an art material. They allow for color mixing without the mess or dust of soft pastels. Oil pastels are also ideal for watercolor resist and scratch techniques. This project will emphasize color, design, and composition.

Materials:

  • Black heavy weight coverstock cut to 5.5"X4.25". (This is a size which you can mail for 20 cents postage)
  • #2 pencil
  • White bond paper
  • Student grade oil pastels
  • Crystal Clear spray fixative
  • Gold or silver pens or bright colored pencils

Directions:
1. Take the black paper postcard and draw around it onto the white bond paper.
2. Draw the idea for your idea within the lines of the sheet of bond paper. Your design can be horizontal (sideways) or vertical (tallways).
3. Sketch your idea with pencil onto the sheet of black paper. Your design can be horizontal or vertical.
4. Draw with color pastels onto the black postcard. Overlap colors. Blend colors by rubbing them together with your finger.
5. When your design is finished, take it outside and spray it with fixative.
6. Turn the post card over. Put the postcard on the table horizontally. Draw a line down the middle of it from top to bottom.
7. You can write a note on the left half with the metallic pens or colored pencils.
8. On the right half, attach 20 cents or more postage. Label the postcard with the recipient's address and mail it!
