 Learning Oil Pastels

Introduction:
Oil pastels have numerous advantages as an art material. They allow for color mixing without the mess or dust of soft pastels. Oil pastels are also ideal for watercolor resist and scratch techniques.

Materials:

  • Student grade watercolor paper or white coverstock
  • Oil based pastels
  • Watercolors

Directions:
1. Draw a design on your watercolor paper or coverstock with the oil pastels. Leave some areas open for watercolor on your paper.
2. Paint over the pastels and into the open areas of the watercolor paper. The oil in the pastels will keep the watercolor from absorbing into the paper where you have drawn. The lines of the pastel can serve as boundaries to control the flow of the watercolor paints.
3. Experiment with painting dark colored watercolor paints over light colored oil pastels and vice versa! See if you can create bright color combinations.
