Introduction:
Paper collage is a great
way to explore two elements of art: shape
and texture. Creating a design with paper
textures and shapes, can be as simple
or complex a as the artist chooses it
to be! The "Jazz" paper cutouts by Henri
Matisse and use of collage by Cubists
are art historical references which may
be emphasized in the lesson.
Materials:
Decorative
paper scraps
Colored
mat board or illustration board
Yes
paste or white glue
Scissors
Pencils
Instructions:
1) Cut or tear shapes out of colored,
decorative papers. It might help to draw shapes on the
papers with pencil before cutting!
2) Organize the shapes in a design on top of the colored mat board or illustration
board. Utilize the negative space of the board behind the shapes to add to
your design.
3) Use Yes paste or white glue to adhere the shapes to the board. Glue shapes
as flatly as possible. Next Time: Try making a three-dimensional design in
the next collage! Adhere curled and highly textured papers which extend outward
from the two-dimensional picture plane. Integrate printed papers into your
collage design. Newspapers and handwritten letters are excellent additions
to collages!
