 Papermaking

What can you use to make paper?

  • Cotton Linters
  • Newspapers
  • Old Used Paper
  • Colored Papers

Things you can add into your paper:
Flowers, Grass, Glitter, Straw, Confetti, Leaves --Just about anything!

Materials:

  • Blender (Ask your parents first.)
  • Lots of Water
  • Big Plastic Tub
  • Cut up strips of old paper or other paper base
  • Any Additives (Flowers, Glitter, etc.)
  • Molds or Screen and Frame
  • Towels (Very Smooth or Pieces of Felt)
  • Sponge

Directions:
1. In a Blender mix 3 parts water to 1 part cut up paper (about 1" square blocks).
2. Blend on medium speed.
3. When it is nice and fluffy, pour mixture into a plastic tub.
4. Add any fun stuff.

Option 1: Use plastic molds. Scoop out handfuls of pulp. Let the pulp drain. Then pack it into a mold. With a clean sponge, gently press out the excess water. Squeeze out the excess water from the sponge and repeat the process until most of the water is out. Let the mold dry for about 4 hours. Pop your cast paper out. Paint it or decorate it as you wish!

Option 2: Sheets of Paper. Use a deckle and a mould. Gently place the deckle and the mould (Mould facing up) at the bottom of the tub; underneath the pulp. Gently lift the deckle out of the water and pulp mixture letting water drain out. Very carefully flip the deckle over onto a towel or felt. With a sponge, push on the back of the deckle to squeeze out the excess water. Let your sheets of paper dry. While your paper is wet you can press different textures into it to make a pattern. This is called embossing.
