 Paint a Pumpkin

By Colleen Anderson

Introduction:
Painting a pumpkin is a safe way to decorate the favorite vegetable of Halloween! This activity is especially challenging because it requires planning a design on two dimensional paper and translating it to a three dimensional object. A traditional pumpkin face or a design which encircles the pumpkin is a fun decorative project!

Materials:

  • Bond paper
  • #2 pencil
  • Eraser Acrylic paints
  • Round and flat synthetic brushes for acrylic painting
  • Water jug
  • Disposable palette paper for color mixing
  • Uncut pumpkin

Directions:
1. Sketch your pumpkin decorating idea on paper. Try to create a design that will cover a large part on one half of the pumpkin. You can also decorate the backside! Sketch the idea for that side of the pumpkin out too.
2. Draw your ideas as closely as possible onto the pumpkin with pencil.
3. Fill in areas with the acrylic paint. Let areas dry and paint smaller details over the top of them!
4. Put your pumpkin where trick-or-treaters will see it on Halloween!
