Kaleidoscopes

Introduction:
Summer is the time of year when all nature's colors have come alive. To celebrate the advent of summer we will make colorful kaleidoscopes out of tissue paper.

Materials:

  • Hunt silver foil paper
  • Cardboard toilet paper rolls
  • Colored tissue paper
  • Cardstock (for framing)
  • Wooden skewers
  • Wet media acetate
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • A thumbtack or thick needle (optional)

Directions:

  1. Cut the hunt foil paper into 3" by 6" pieces. Then fold it in thirds and tape it into a triangle shape with the silver surface facing in on itself. Put it aside for the moment. *Make sure that the triangle fits snugly inside the toilet paper roll so that it does not fall out.

  2. Take one of the pointed bamboo skewers and tape it to the toilet paper roll with about 1" of the pointed side hanging over the edge. Cut the other end to be flush with the cardboard roll. Now put this piece aside for the moment.

  3. Cut a 3" circle out of acetate as well as (2) 3" circles out of cardstock. The cardstock circles will serve as a frame for the acetate so you will need to cut out the centers, leaving 2 thin circular frame pieces. Take colored tissue paper and tear it into small pieces. Glue these pieces onto the acetate. Overlap the scraps for more interesting effects. When the tissue paper is dry, glue the cardstock frame on both sides and trim the circle.

  4. Insert the silver foil triangle inside the toilet paper roll. Now poke a small hole in the middle of the tissue paper circle and mount it onto the dowel. Look through the opposite end of the roll at the color circle and turn it for fabulous kaleidoscope action! If you want, decorate the toilet paper roll with tissue paper or paint.
