In
the past, technical pens were used primarily
by draftspeople because of their unvarying
line width. Now, artists are also taking
advantage of this feature, along with
the waterproof ink used by technical
pens. These pens must be used perpendicular
to the drawing surface. This surface
must be smooth to prevent excessive wearing
of the point. Composed of a hollow tube
with a pin in the center, technical pens
come in 13 sizes from 6x0 (.13 mm) to
7 (2.0 mm) determined by the size of
the pin. These pens are a little temperamental
are require regular cleaning, filling,
and maintenance. If they are stored upright
and capped, technical pens can remain
clog-free for up to two weeks.
