What do cold press, hot press, and rough mean?

The terms cold press, hot press, and rough refer to the finish, or surface texture, of drawing and watercolor papers. Cold press papers have a medium, slightly grained texture and are made by pressing the paper between cold rollers. A cold-press surface can also be obtained by pressing the still-wet paper against a felt mat. Hot-pressed papers are very smooth and are obtained by passing finished sheets through either hot or highly polished metal rollers. Rough papers are not pressed at all thus giving them an irregular, bumpy texture.
