What is the difference between "student" and "artist" grade paint?

The main difference between "student" grade and "artist" grade is the amount of pure pigment used. Student grade paint generally has more fillers and less pure pigment than true artist grade paint. This allows the manufacturer to provide a less expensive alternative for those who are just getting started.

You will notice the difference between artist and student paint in the intensity of the color and also when mixing colors. Mixing student grade colors can result in a "muddier" appearance. Student grade paints also may not be as permanent or lightfast as the artist colors.
