A
glaze, as defined in The Artist's
Handbook, generally refers to a
thin transparent layer of oil color of
a darker value applied over either an
opaque or transparent layer of oil or
tempera underpainting of lighter value.
The color of the undercoat blends with
that of the transparent glaze.Minute
amounts of opaque or semiopaque pigments
are often added to transparent glazes,
the slight thickness of the film allowing
the color of the underpainting to remain
effective. This is recommended for the
purpose of toning down brilliance or
lack of solidity.
