Gouache

Is it neccessary to 'gesso' a canvas or paper surface before using gouache?

You should always gesso a canvas if you plan to apply paint because it will absorb much of the paint and leave the painting dull. If you get the right kind of paper, such as watercolor paper or multimedia paper with some weight to it. Sketching paper is much to light. If you plan on using much water you may want to choose a heavy (2-300 pound) watercolor paper with gouache.
