Watercolor

What does the term "wet in wet" mean?

Wet in wet painting is a technique used in watercolor painting. This is accomplished by thoroughly soaking the watercolor paper just below the level of saturation and applying the paint to the wet surface. The paper can be kept wet by soaking it for about an hour and then laying it on either a sheet of plate glass or drawing board. This technique creates a softer, hazy application of paint on the painting surface.

Wet in wet is also a technique used in oil painting. The artist actually applies wet paint to wet paint on the canvas, mixing colors directly on the painting surface. William Alexander and Bob Ross are two commonly known artists that use this oil painting technique.
