Illustrated Talk & Demo

Thomas Buchanan: The Magic Rite of Drawing, Saturday, July 29, 1-3pm, Denver store only

With three Kickstarter campaigns to his credit, illustrator Thomas Haller Buchanan has experienced the thrills and chills of the roller coaster of funding and self-publishing art books.

His latest art book, The Magic Rite of Drawing, is the result of his 2nd successful Kickstarter.

He will share some of his detailed drawings, talk about his process of drawing, demonstrate his drawing materials and encourage visual artists to run KickStarter campaigns for their own projects.

About the Artist
Buchanan has worked continuously for nearly 50 years as a professional illustrator. He has worked in all artistic media, but now focuses on the process of drawing for most of his projects — utilizing graphite, charcoal, pastel chalks and pencils, sometimes combined with watercolor.

As a teenager, he was trained in a busy commercial art studio and as a combat artist in the U.S. Army, where he learned, as he says, “to be fast, efficient and detailed — the lessons I learned then have maintained my work through the years.”

Buchanan has worked in all communications media as an illustrator, but for the last twenty years has concentrated as an ‘interpretive illustrator’ for museums and national park visitor centers, using art to help educate the public through history, nature and science exhibits.

He now specializes in ‘people’ as subjects, with portrait commissions from all parts of the world and is currently illustrating a graphic novel about Harvey Milk. His art career was the subject of a PBS documentary and recently he had a gallery showing of his drawings, many of them published in his art books, which will be available for sale and signing at this event.
